About this position

Visiting Part-Time Lecturer in History Description The Department of History at the College of the Holy Cross invites applications for a visiting part-time faculty position to teach two sections of Native American History 1: The Indians' New World (19 students each, fully enrolled) during the fall 2026, semester to begin in AUGUST 2026. HIST 271: Native American History 1: The Indians' New World: This course is a survey of Native American history from the pre-Columbian era through the mid-19th century. Many people have much to "unlearn" about Native American history before true learning can take place. What assumptions do many Americans have about Native history? Where to Native Americans appear in our national and local narratives, where are they absent, and why? What was life like in North America 500 years ago? How did Native Americans react and relate to various forms of European settler colonialism? We cannot make broad generalizations about Indian experiences; how do particularities of sex, age, and geographical location demonstrate diverse experiences among Native Americans? These are some of the questions we will consider as we explore themes such as trade, work, war, disease, gender and religion, in early North America. The course begins by looking at theories of origin and life in North America before 1492. It ends with forced "removals" of the mid-19th century. There are no employee benefits associated with this part-time visiting faculty appointment. Compensation for teaching two courses in the Fall 2026 semester is $21,300. The College will not support H-1B visa applications that require the $100,000 employer fee. Qualifications Candidates must demonstrate commitment to, and excellence in, undergraduate teaching and inclusive pedagogies as informed by current practice and scholarship in the field. Application Instructions Please submit a letter of application; a current curriculum vitae; a statement on teaching philosophy and interests; graduate t
