Carnegie Mellon University: Heinz College Location: Pittsburgh, PA Description: Adjunct Instructor: Voting Policy in America The Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University seeks an adjunct instructor for Voting Policy in America. We invite professionals with deep experience and demonstrated leadership in the field to apply. This course is designed to provide an in-depth look at the construction and destruction of American democracy; equipping students to evaluate modern changes in electoral policy amid complex socio-political debates. The learning objectives of this course are to: Utilize communication skills for creating constructive dialogues with others. Learn skills to help manage discomfort, and maintain respectful discourse. Understand how to assess a policy from multiple perspectives and across different goals and objectives. Recognize the difference between a debate and an argument. Apply a policy analysis methodology / framework to help assess a policy perspective or challenge. Apply critical thinking to policy, and understand different situational challenges by exploring various scenarios. Explore the challenges of policy implementation. The course is an elective course for students across all Heinz College programs. The course is a micro mini course (i.e. 2-3 days of instruction) in the fall semester. The course will meet in-person on Saturday 9/26 and Sunday 9/27, 9am - 4:30 pm both days, in-person. The course design should at minimum include relevant readings (textbook, research papers, news articles, etc.), in-class discussions, and appropriate evaluations of mastery of concepts for grading purposes (homework, quizzes/exams, etc.). Given the focus of Heinz College graduate programs, utilization of data, strategic thinking, and application of leadership skills are highly encouraged to be integrated into the course.
