About this position
The responsibilities of this appointment will be to prepare for and teach THTR 124-01 - Intro to Sound for the Stage in the International Theater Program in the Department of English in Spring 2027 from January 16, 2027, to May 15, 2027. This will include designing and delivering curriculum and instructional materials and assessing student learning through the grading of course assignments, lab proficiency, and tests. The hands-on supervision of Sound Labs (in which students work on crews to realize a professional sound design) is vital. The appropriate candidate will be able to administer instructional trainings, adhere to policies set forth by the Program, be available to meet with students in suitable office hours, and to advise students in connection with the course. The course introduces students of varying prior experience (from novice to high school) to knowledge and technical proficiency sufficient to support active, departmental productions. Students should be able to work on a sound crew and have a basic understanding of the components of a sound design for the stage, from assembling a sound system to programming a cue list of sound effects. Course materials should cover production teams and sound staff and tools of the trade: microphones (including wireless mic’ing), speakers (including rigging from height), amplifiers, cables and cable management, processors, and analog vs digital consoles. Students should learn to understand documentation (speaker plans and signal flow) and be able to build an appropriately scaled system from scratch. The course might introduce students to the sound design process (script analysis, research, building cues, and working with directors/design teams) though technical proficiency, not design, is its main focus. This course meets, in person, on Thursdays 11:05 am- 1:45pm on the University of Rochester's River Campus. Qualifications: Requires MFA or equivalent combination of education and experience. A track record of professional sound engineering or design work and/or undergraduate teaching experience is preferred.
