The course will be an Interior Design Studio. HPCP 340: Special Topics, Interior Design Studio is a three-credit undergraduate studio course focused on the principles and practice of interior design within historic and existing buildings. The course will meet in person once each week for one three-hour studio session on the College of Charleston campus. The course introduces students to space planning, circulation, human dimensions, accessibility, scale and proportion, color, lighting, materials and finishes, furnishings, visual communication, and the relationship between contemporary interior interventions and existing architectural character. Particular emphasis is placed on adaptive reuse and the sensitive treatment of historic interiors for contemporary use. The instructor will guide students through field investigation, precedent study, measured documentation, programming, schematic design, materials and lighting development, drawing and digital representation, model making, individual desk critiques, group pin-ups, and formal design reviews. The semester will culminate in a comprehensive adaptive-reuse interior design project. We seek an instructor who can bring professional design practice into the studio and mentor undergraduate students through an iterative design process. The successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in interior design, interior architecture, architecture, historic preservation, adaptive reuse, or a closely related field, as well as strong visual communication and design-development skills. Experience with historic buildings, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, accessibility, lighting, materials, furniture and finishes, or interior detailing is particularly desirable. Familiarity with contemporary design and visualization tools such as AutoCAD, SketchUp, Adobe Creative Suite, or comparable software is preferred. Previous college-level teaching experience is desirable but not required. Professional practice, mentoring, studio critique, internship supervision, or comparable experience working with emerging designers will be considered valuable. A master's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, Architecture, Historic Preservation, or a closely related field is preferred. Candidates with other graduate preparation and substantial professional expertise directly relevant to the course may be considered subject to College of Charleston faculty credentialing requirements.
