Intelligence oversight and democratic accountability; digital surveillance and civil liberties; civil society responses to AI-enabled surveillance; intelligence governance in Britain and southern Africa; colonial legacies in security institutions; researching secret institutions through interviews, documentary analysis and process tracing; political sociology of elites, secrecy and state power; academic writing across disciplinary conventions.

I hold a PGCE in Secondary History with Computing and Qualified Teacher Status. I have taught History, Politics, Geography, Computing and English in classroom, small-group and individual settings, including work with adult learners and students who spoke English as an additional language. In 2026, I independently designed and delivered Rebellious Writing Now for the University of Glasgow’s Write of Spring Festival. The programme engaged university researchers and staff from different disciplines in examining stylistic problems arising from their academic writing. I established the learning outcomes, developed the materials, facilitated the activities and evaluated participant learning. I have also presented research at academic conferences, submitted written evidence to parliamentary committees and communicated research to specialist and public audiences.

I translate research on complex and sometimes secretive institutions into clear questions that students can investigate through evidence. My lectures combine concise explanation with comparative cases, primary documents and structured discussion. I encourage students to assess competing interpretations, identify the institutional interests behind public claims and connect theoretical arguments with practical questions of governance. Sessions can be adapted for Politics, Sociology, International Relations, Security Studies, Public Policy and interdisciplinary programmes. I am particularly interested in helping students understand intelligence oversight and surveillance through comparisons between Britain and southern Africa.
