About this position
Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC), a non-profit organization serving vulnerable immigrant and refugee families in the DC Metro area, seeks teachers to teach in-person and or online ESOL classes for adult literacy and beginner level English learners in Prince George’s County and Montgomery County, MD. SHC’s mission is to reach newcomers who have significant barriers to accessing traditional classes. We empower people who are often isolated and vulnerable members of their community to develop into more confident and self-sufficient English learners. Our approach to teaching and learning is specifically tailored to meet the needs of this student population. This position is paid between $25- $34 per hour. In-person classes would be taught from a community location such as a library or community center, at the SHC classroom, or in the SHC mobile classroom. SHC Classes meet in various locations in Prince George’s and Montgomery County. Online classes meet remotely on Zoom. They meet twice per week in the mornings and early afternoons. Student engagement on non-class days and class planning time are also compensated for all SHC teaching positions (in addition to live teaching time). SHC provides partial reimbursement for teachers' personal cell phone usage for class-related purposes. There are also paid opportunities for teacher mentoring, professional development (by outside organizations and by SHC teachers), and conducting new student assessments and CASAS assessments. Hours taught online per week is dependent upon the number of classes available. SHC classes meet for 16-week sessions during the regular school year, and 5 weeks in the summer. Responsibilities: Use the curriculum provided by SHC to teach ELL classes. Requirements (please do not apply if you do not meet these minimum requirements): • Minimum one year of classroom experience teaching Adult ESL in the United States • Candidates must have a degree or certification in TESOL/TESL/TEFL or similar
