Adjunct Instructor – Underground Utility & Civil Infrastructure Position Summary: We are seeking a knowledgeable and practical Adjunct Instructor to deliver hands-on, industry-aligned instruction covering wet utility installation, excavation safety, plan reading, and environmental compliance. Additional paid hours are allocated for curriculum development and lesson mapping prior to class launch. This position is ideal for a recently retired or practicing Civil Engineer, Utility Superintendent, Construction Estimator, or Underground Utility Designer looking to train the next generation of infrastructure professionals. Key Instructional Topics: • Blueprint Reading & Utility Drawings: Teaching students how to interpret civil plan sets, trace main lines, identify service connections, and locate valve/hydrant placements. • Excavations, Soil Mechanics & Safety: Delivering practical training on OSHA trenching standards (sloping, benching, and shoring), soil classification (Types A, B, and C), and state locate laws / 811 protocols. • Environmental Ecology & MDE Reporting: Guiding students through Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) regulations, erosion and sediment control (ESC), and reporting standards tied to water and sanitary line excavations. • Permitting & Site Restoration: Covering Right-of-Way (ROW) permit specifications, trench excavation standards, and proper pavement restoration details. Duties & Responsibilities: • Develop and refine curriculum, lecture materials, and practical field/lab exercises (paid separately from teaching hours). • Instruct students using real-world civil construction plan sets and practical scenarios. • Evaluate student understanding of OSHA trench safety guidelines and local environmental reporting compliance. • Maintain structured coursework and align instructional delivery with current industry standards.
